“Without Those Who Sacrificed Before Me, There Would Be No Me”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Antonio Mitchell. He is Warehouse Operations Manager for Hanes Geo Components in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has been with L&P since 2004.

“When I started in the Hanes Dye & Finishing division, I was a Pad Inspector. I have been promoted into various roles over the years – Forklift Operator, Cycle Counter, and Shipping/Production Supervisor to name a few.

Now, as Operations Manager, what I enjoy most about my job is traveling to other locations and meeting new faces under the Hanes Geo umbrella. This allows me to continue to sharpen my career skills to become a better employee and manager. I also love the new adventures of day-to-day operations and seeing ideas and plans come together.

February means a lot to me. The first thing that comes to my mind is the continuous change happening throughout the world. It’s a month to create opportunity and be great at all we do.

I am thankful every day for what our ancestors, activists, scientists, and inventors have contributed to the world as a whole. From Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who galvanized the civil rights movement, to Madam C.J. Walker and George Washington Carver who became self-made millionaires. From Langston Hughes, a famous poet in the Harlem Renaissance, to Carter G. Woodson, a famous scholar, educator, and publisher, to Thurgood Marshall, the first African American appointed to Supreme Court – without those who sacrificed before me, there would be no me. Celebrating Black history is every day for me.”

“I Try to Be a Life Saver to My Colleagues”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Portia Phifer, HR and Safety Manager at our Flooring Products facility in Statesville, North Carolina. She has worked with us for 4 years.

“As HR and Safety Manager, I most enjoy meaningful interactions with our people. If there are issues that they need help with, I am here to assist them. I pride myself on being approachable and easy to talk to. I even keep a dish of Life Savers on my desk as a reminder that I will definitely try to be a ‘life saver’ to my colleagues and in matters at our workplace.

I am most proud that while I didn’t take a traditional route of furthering my education, I was able to complete two degrees as a working adult.

I am excited that Leggett & Platt sees the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans. We benefit from many inventions on a daily basis that were directly contributed by African Americans. While I try to reflect on the history of African Americans on a consistent basis, this month’s acknowledgments and celebrations make me proud of the contributions made by people like me.

I think it’s important for my grandchildren to understand that they stand on the shoulders of great men and women, and they can accomplish great things as well.”

“I Have the Opportunity to Excel”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Marché Favors. She is a Senior HR Generalist at one of our Elite Comfort Solutions (ECS) facilities. She has worked with us for 5 years.

“In my role, I enjoy working with people and assisting employees through the hiring process and watching their development in their respective roles. My role is important because I engage with employees from the start of their employment journey with ECS. I introduce them to the company and remain connected throughout to assist as needed.

Celebrating Black history in February is special. It gives me a sense of pride to know that I have the opportunity to excel and to be successful in life. I am truly thankful to those who came before me and sacrificed in so many ways.”

Bringing Boundless Sleep Solutions to Life: A Look Inside the Creative Process of Designing ISPA Displays

Next month, our Bedding team is headed to the bi-annual ISPA EXPO in Orlando, Florida, to showcase our products, capabilities, and innovations through an exhibit called Boundless Sleep Solutions.

Scott Clark, Senior Creative Director

Scott Clark, Senior Creative Director of our Marketing + Creative team, shared more about the process of developing the creative vision for L&P’s space at the expo. “With the help of our Bedding and creative teams, I developed the overall vision and look and feel of the space that ISPA visitors will experience,” he says.

Bringing that creative vision to life isn’t as easy as it might seem, and it takes a village of creative and industry-focused experts. “My initial concepts went from written ideas, sketches, and mood boards to revision after revision for every wall, structure, display, and marketing element related to the event. Those visual and experiential ideas bounced between sales teams, product development teams, engineers, and back through our Marketing + Creative team to ultimately become the total experience in Orlando.”

There are several Marketing + Creative team members involved in the creative design process, including Taylor Orr, 3D Artist/Animator, who created the final 3D rendering for our 2019 booth.

Creating the ISPA space also requires thinking about visitor experience from a tangible standpoint versus what someone sees on a computer screen. “Designing and branding an environment requires you to think about how the space looks as you approach it, how it feels from every angle within that space, and how to best communicate the key messages during the experience,” Scott says. “My main role is making sure our brand is strong, bold, and obvious, and that every visitor is positively exposed to the knowledge and information that we want to deliver.”

The team approaches each year’s display as an opportunity to improve from the previous year. “Being an industry leader truly raises the stakes and applies pressure to make it a great experience with a compelling message,” Scott concludes. “Our space must stand out and represent the company like the leader we are.”

“I Am, By Far, Proudest of My Family and Faith”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Scoval Blevins is the Branch Manager at our Elite Comfort Solutions (ECS) facilities in Newnan, Georgia. He’s been with ECS for 8 years.

“My favorite thing about what I do is working with, mentoring, and helping to shape individuals. I truly value relationships, and I enjoy seeing individuals excel toward their greatest potential.

I am, by far, proudest of my family and faith. These two pieces of my life are the most important to me and have the greatest impact in everything I do.

Black History Month means a lot to me because it highlights for everyone the impacts by Black Americans. It further sheds great light on the advancements Black Americans have made throughout American history. There are strides still left to be made.”

Celebrating Lunar New Year in Jiaxing, China

Our team at the Home Furniture facility in Jiaxing, China, wishes everyone a happy and healthy Lunar New Year!

In China, the color red is aligned with happiness and good luck during festivals. Twelve animals rotate one by one to go along with a full Chinese Lunar Year.

For Lunar Year 2022, the guardian beast is Tiger, so the team in Jiaxing decorated with red tiger toys and wore clothes adorned with a tiger figure. “We expect the guardian beast to protect us and bring all the best to us,” explains Angela Ye, HR Director.

The team also decorated offices with red lanterns, wishing for a prosperous new year for our employees. We are all looking forward a safe, healthy, and happy Lunar New Year holiday with our families!

“I Try to Celebrate My Heritage Every Day”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Sharon Pratt. She is a Routing Coordinator at our Flooring Products facility in Houston, Mississippi. She has been with L&P for 15 years.

“I enjoy talking to the customers and interacting with so many of them over the phone every day. I feel my job is important because I’m the person listening and trying to make sure that they are happy and get what they need on their delivery.

I am very proud to have a job that helps me as a single mother to be financially able to provide for my daughter.

To some, Black history may only be celebrated during the month of February, but not for me. I try to celebrate my heritage every day. I am a proud Black woman who has overcome so many adversities. With that being said, I think it is great that we celebrate our ancestors and share their contributions and achievements with others during the month of February.”

Innovation, Interaction, Inspiration: L&P Prepares for 2022’s ISPA Bedding Expo

Next month, our Bedding segment is heading off to the annual ISPA Expo in Orlando, Florida.

ISPA, or International Sleep Products Association, hosts the event each year for mattress producers and industry leaders from around the world to connect, showcase products and ideas, and explore the opportunities that set the pace for the mattress industry’s future.

This year, our newest Bedding partners, Elite Comfort Solutions and Peterson Chemical Technology, will join the fun. A team of L&P sales representatives will provide personalized, socially distanced tours through our booths during the event, which will include live lab demonstrations, working machines, and innovative products.

Fun fact: L&P has taken part in ISPA since 1943, minus one event in 2006!

New Year, New Perspectives: Hannah McAdams

To kick off 2022, we’ve been introducing you to several of our newest employees and sharing their thoughts on the year ahead.

Meet Hannah McAdams, who joined our Tupelo Sleeper facility in Tupelo, Mississippi. Hannah wears many hats in her role, coordinating continuous improvement, HR, safety, and environmental activities.

What brought you to L&P?

In the past, I worked as a manager in the restaurant industry and also tried my hand within finance. The open position with L&P really piqued my interest. The job description combined skillsets from my previous jobs and also added the exciting element of HR. When I researched L&P, I was also impressed by the number of veterans that have worked here for so long. It says a lot about a company when people stay – this showed me that L&P values its employees.

I’ve never felt more comfortable or happy with a job than I do now. I look forward to going to work every day. I know that I have a lot to learn, and I’ve only scratched the surface, but people are always willing to help and want to see me succeed. I couldn’t ask for a better career change and I look forward to all the opportunities ahead of me.

What is something surprising about you?

I grew up on a small, third-generation farm in Northeast Ohio and spent most of my younger years showing livestock through my county 4-H. I have shown everything from poultry and rabbits to steers and hogs. I’ve since moved to Mississippi where I attended Mississippi State University (GO DAWGS!) and where I met my husband. After graduation, we came to call Tupelo home. Now, my husband, four-year-old son, and I love visiting the family farm on “vacation” and usually try to plan our time off around harvesting season and calving season.

What are your goals for 2022?

My professional goals are pretty simple. The main one is to learn my job and everything it entails. I also want to learn as much as I can about my facility and how things work throughout it. This is a whole new industry for me, and I’m excited to explore the ins and outs of every part of it. I also hope that I can bring some new ideas from my past positions and improve an already great company.
